In addition to positive experiences that come during this period, there are difficulties and inequities that can occur before, during and after childbirth which can impact the entire family. The World Health Organization estimates that more than 295,000 women die a year from pregnancy related causes. The United States alone has the highest maternal mortality rate amongst developed countries. Maternal health concerns also include pregnancy complications such as hypertensive disorders, postpartum hemorrhage, and pulmonary embolism. The Anthem Maternal Health Challenge seeks to work with entrepreneurs and startups to use innovative, evidence-based solutions to transform the current state of maternal health. These solutions should address the multifaceted contributing factors such as racial health inequities that impact mothers before, during, and after childbirth.
